Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada is the resting place of the Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, built by his son Maharaja Sardar Singh in 1899. The huge cenotaph is built using intricately carved thin sheets of marble, made specifically to emanate light when the sunlight falls upon the structure. A garden space with multiple gazebos and a small lake complete the complex. Apart from the main cenotaph, three more were built over the years. The main cenotaph consists of portraits and paintings of the different rulers of the city. Now the place works as a cremation ground for the members of the royal family of the Marwar.

Kaylana Lake is an artificial lake built by Pratap Singh 1872, covering an area of 84sqkm. In the ancient times, the area had palaces and gardens built by two rulers of Jodhpur but were later destroyed by Pratap Singh and his men to cater to the needs of the people living there. Jodhpur, a city located near to the Thar Desert, has always been short of water and hence this lake was created. It is a beautiful location to visit, as the lake is flanked by the formations of igneous rocks on both sides. The lake gets its water from the Elephant Canal, which is further connected by the Indira Gandhi Canal.

Rao Jodha Desert Park

Rao Jodha Desert Park is a protected area of nature, lying just a few kilometers from Mehrangarh Fort. The park was created in 2006 to restore the ecology of the area surrounding the fort. Once a natural habitat for desert animals who loved rocks, it now was crowded by an invasive thorny shrub, Baavlia. The task was to clear the Baavlia and make the place suitable for the animals to thrive once again. Now the area has some of the best possible vegetation for semi-arid regions, inviting the desert animals to take shelter here. You may visit this place after visiting the Fort and maybe get inspired to do something similar for the nature.
