Pondicherry is the capital city of the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry that is surrounded by Tamil Nadu and shares its culture with the state. The majority of the present day city has the flavour of the French community, as France was the main coloniser of the region for a long time. French is still one of the languages used in the area, apart from Tamil and English.
