Madurai is one of the major cities in Tamil Nadu, located on the banks of River Vaigai. The city has its history dating back to 300BC and has been ruled by many rulers over the years. Pandyas, Cholas, Madurai Sultanate, Vijayanagara Empire and the British East India Company were some of the rulers. The city thus has many historical monuments, temples and other cultural centres.

Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the prominent temples in South India and attracts a huge number of tourists on a daily basis. Koodal Azhagar Temple, Alagar Koyil and Kazimar Big Mosque are the other major religious sites in the area.

Thirumalai Nayak Palace is an excellent example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The sound and light show organised in the palace is a spectacle in itself. The Gandhi Memorial Museum present here is one of the five Sangrahalayas in the country.
