Kovalam is a beach town located in Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala. The town was a normal fishing village in Kerala but shot into the limelight as a large numbers of hippies visited the beach town in the early seventies. Kovalam has three beaches-Lighthouse beach, Hawah beach and Samudra beach.
The shallow waters stretched for hundreds of meters make Samudra Beach an ideal location for swimming. The 35 meter high lighthouse towering at atop Kurumkal hillock is a major attraction in the Lighthouse beach. The waves crashing on to the rocks is a sight to behold. The other major tourist attractions in and near Kovalam are Vellayani Lake, Kovalam Art Gallery, Neyyar Dam, Aruvikkara Dam, VIzhinjam Rock Cut Temple, etc.
There are many resorts lined across the beaches, giving you plenty of options to spend some quality time in a luxurious manner near nature. The beach town is famous for its foreign tourists, especially coming from Europe and Israel. The place is famous for its seafood and nightlife with streets thronged by flea markets and food joints.
