Delhi Travel Guide

Delhi is the capital of India. The state dates all the way back to the second millennium BC, with proof of regular inhabitation dating back to the 6th century BC. According to mythological records, Delhi was the capital city of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, making this city extremely relevant even before India became a country.

Delhi was a prominent city during the Mughal Era and the city contains various monuments and relics that date back to this age. From the Qutub Minar built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, to the Red Fort built by Akbar, Delhi offers numerous glimpses into its past.

After the Mughal Era began to decline, the East Indian Company seized Delhi and other Indian states in 1803. During this time, Delhi was a district province of Punjab. However, by 1911, the British moved their capital from Calcutta to Delhi, changing the landscape of the city once again. The areas inhabited by the British were New Delhi, a name that has stuck to this day. This part of the city was also called Lutyens Delhi, which is another name that is still used today.

During Partition, refugees from West Punjab (now in Pakistan) sought refuge in Delhi, which is why the city is sometimes associated with Punjabi culture and cuisine. From an architectural point of view, Delhi offers old monuments as well as cosmopolitan malls and buildings, making this a city filled with juxtaposition. Delhi has seen a surge in recent migrations from people all over India, making this city a melting pot of cultures.

Transport in Delhi is dominated by the Delhi Metro, which has 214 stations and private transport on the road. The metro connects all parts of the vast city so it is easy to get by.
